Description

When St. John's Wort comes to mind, we often think about a spreading groundcover plant. The Pumpkin Hypericum is an upright, rounded, perennial shrub that grows up to 3 feet tall and nearly as wide. From late spring through early summer, it features abundant clusters of unique and exotic star-shaped flowers with bright yellow petals surrounding a prominent ring of golden-yellow, fiber optic-like stamens at the center. The flowers are followed by an equally abundant display of showy orange berries resembling little pumpkins, which are excellent for cutting and display in fall floral arrangements. The berries persist through fall and into winter, which the birds will certainly appreciate. Pumpkin Hypericum is a colorful accent in sunny garden spaces and containers, or in groupings and drifts in larger borders. Easy to grow in garden beds and containers, it is an exceptionally low-maintenance plant with high drought, heat, and cold tolerance (-10F), and you might be happy to know the deer and rabbits turn their nose up at it!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to 3 feet tall and nearly as wide, Pumpkin Hypericum is ideal for use as an accent in sunny garden spaces, or groupings and drifts in larger borders or on slopes. It is an excellent accent or filler shrub in home foundation plantings. Also nice as a solo or combined with other plants in container gardens. A fine addition to orange or yellow theme gardens, pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, bird and wildlife gardens, and xeric gardens (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  24 inches apart for mass plantings or solid borders; 42 inches or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Pumpkin Hypericum is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil, including well-drained clay, and six or more hours of sunlight daily. For the best flowering, it prefers sandy soils. The plant is less floriferous in part shade. In late winter or early spring, the plant can be cut back by one-third of its height before new growth emerges. For example, if the plant is 3 feet tall, cut off 1 foot.
