Description

Bred back in 1934 by the USDA's first blueberry breeder, Frederick Cole, the Razz Blueberry stayed a hidden treasure for over 75 years before being named and released in the marketplace. Its berries were too soft for shipping, so commercial blueberry farmers weren't interested in it. Some of the researchers thankfully kept some to grow in their home gardens, and now we all can enjoy this fantastic selection that is loved for its amazingly delicious fruits with a sweet raspberry flavor, making it taste more like huckleberry. Pick the plump fruits as they ripen and eat them fresh, or use them in baking and preserves. Razz forms an upright, bushy shrub up to 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide clothed in handsome dark green foliage that contrasts beautifully with abundant clusters of pure-white flowers in spring. The equally abundant periwinkle blue berries follow the flowers in mid-summer. After the harvest season ends the foliage puts on a spectacular fall foliage color show in blazing red and orange shades. An extremely attractive bush, Razz is excellent for the edible landscape or the fruit garden in USDA Zones 4a-7b.

NOTE: Our fruit plants are grown outdoors in containers so they are fully rooted and landscape-ready upon arrival.

Growing Preferences

Blueberry plants grow best in an acidic (pH of 4.8 to 5.2), organically rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. The more sun the better for best berry production. The shallow, fibrous roots of blueberry plants like a consistently moist but well-drained soil, which can be provided by a layer of organic mulch. Although blueberries are self-fertile, cross-pollination produces the best fruit crop (larger berries and yields). Therefore, it is best to plant more than one variety that will bloom simultaneously. Blueberry season can be extended by planting early, mid-season, and late varieties. USDA Zones: 4a-7b  Find Your Zone
