Description

A close relative of blueberry and cranberry, the Red Candy Ligonberry is a highly attractive, super cold-hardy, and shade-tolerant evergreen fruit-bearing shrub that produces loads of pink-tinted white flowers in spring that are followed by scarlet-red edible berries. The berries are produced over a long period from mid-summer to early fall and can be picked and eaten fresh off the bush or stored for up to several months in the refrigerator. The berries can also be used to make pies or other sweet treats, such as preserves and jellies. Documented research shows that lingonberries are high in antioxidants and contain abundant nutrients. At only 8 inches tall and a foot or so wide, this shade-lover is excellent for use as an accent in small garden spaces and containers, or grouped or as a groundcover or border. Cold hardy to -45F!

NOTE: All of our fruit plants are grown in containers outdoors so they are fully rooted and landscape-ready upon arrival.

Growing Preferences

Red Candy Ligonberry are easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average to high fertility in shade to part shade. Morning and evening sun are fine, but avoid direct afternoon sunlight. An acidic soil with a pH of 4.0 to 5.5 is preferred. If you need to make your soil more acidic, apply Soil Sulfur as directed on the product label to acidify the soil. One pound of sulfur applied to 100 square feet of soil will lower the pH by about 1 pH unit (from 6.0 to 5.0). The sulfur works best if it is tilled to about six inches in the soil. Adding organic matter to the soil at planting time, such as composted cow manure or composted leaves, will also help to create an acidic soil. Extremely cold, hardy to -45F, and low maintenance.
