Description

With its large yellow to chartreuse leaves painted with jagged lightning-like bolts of vivid red, the 'Red Lightning' Heuchera is absolutely electrifying! Being a Villosa Hybrid, Red Lightning delivers dazzling steadfast color with the highest heat and humidity tolerance. To add to its appeal, billowing soft, dainty bell shaped white flowers float on thin stems above the tidy foliage mound during summer. The foliage colors on this one hold well throughout the seasons to provide long-lasting bountiful color in the garden that won't go unnoticed!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a mound to 8 to 10 inches tall and 12 to 16 inches wide, with flowers to 18 inches tall, Red Lightning Heuchera is ideal for use as a solo or combined with other plants in containers, as an accent or grouping in garden beds and landscape borders, or as a border plant along paths and walkways. Will grow in full sun in the Pacific Northwest and other northern regions but prefers afternoon shade or all-day filtered sun in the deep South. A fine addition to Heuchera gardens, woodland gardens, white or silver/grey theme gardens, rock gardens and perennial shade gardens.

In garden beds or containers, we like to combine Heuchera plants with other Heuchera varieties, hosta lilies, perennial ferns and other part shade to shade loving plants and trees.

Suggested Spacing:  16 inches apart for mass plantings;  24+ inches or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

When planted right, and in the right spot Heuchera are easy to grow.

Sun Preference:  Though Heuchera tolerate full sun in cooler zones north of USDA Zone 7 they appreciate some afternoon shade in USDA Zones 7-9. If grown in full sun, consistent moisture is very important. Scorch and general foliage decline may occur if soils are allowed to dry out for too long.

Soil Preferences:  Heuchera prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. In the warmer climates of the southern zones plants are often evergreen, retaining nice foliage color throughout the winter season. In colder, northern zones foliage may discolor or die back over a harsh winter. Simply prune unsightly foliage away before new growth begins to emerge in late winter or early spring. Plant with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Feed in spring with an organic plant food.
