Description
An exceptionally easy-to-grow dwarf selection of our North American native Arborvitae, 'Rheingold' is a glowing evergreen shrub featuring attractive lacy foliage that changes color with the seasons on a rounded conical form 3 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide. During the warm season, it displays showy, bright golden-yellow new foliage that turns an attractive orange-bronze color throughout the winter season. The foliage appears in flat, fan-shaped clusters on a rounded conical form that eventually matures from 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, making it a fine, low-maintenance, textural specimen to light up small garden spaces or container gardens or in groupings or as a hedge where space allows.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 5 feet tall and wide in a rounded conical form, the Rheingold Arborvitae is ideal for use as a specimen or in small groupings in small to medium size gardens, and in groupings or as a straight or staggered hedge row in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. Plant in the ground or in pots on either side of the front door or to accentuate an entrance. Great for use in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, gold or yellow gardens and formal gardens.
Spacing: 3 feet apart for solid hedges; 7 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Rheingold Arborvitae is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Best and brightest foliage color with 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. Plants are moderately drought tolerant when established but do not like an overly dry site. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic. Maintenance is minimal with very little if any trimming ever required.
