Description
If you like exotic then you're going to love the Samurai Toad Lily, a hardy and easy-to-grow perennial that brings highly unusual, star-shaped lily-like flowers with jewel-tones of rose purple with red spots. Each flower features six showy tepals; 3 inner petals and 3 outer sepals which are similar in appearance. These unique orchid like flowers bloom from summer through fall attracting butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. What's more, Samurai displays variegated green leaves with golden-yellow borders that will light up the shade garden. Absolutely sparkles in the shade garden and needles to say is quite the conversation piece!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 12 to 18 inches tall and 24 to 36 inches wide, the Samurai Toad Lily is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in shady landscape and perennial borders. Also suitable for growing in pots, planters and other containers. Perfect in consistently moist soils near garden ponds or other water features. Plant near patuos and other outdoor sitting areas where the flowers can be appreciated from close up. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, container gardens, cottage gardens, perennial gardens, woodland borders and around water gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 24 inches apart for groupings; 4+ feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Toad Lily is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full shade or part shade, avoiding direct afternoon sun. It prefers a consistently moist to wet humusy, organically rich soil. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water if you see the foliage begin to wilt. Feed in spring and again in early summer with a slow-release flower food or natural or organic plant food.
