Description

A beautiful cultivar discovered by Anthony Waterer in the early 1860s in the United Kingdom, Pinus sylvestris 'Watereri' is an exceptionally attractive Scots Pine with thick blue-gray foliage on an upright broad shrub or small tree. We really like it best as a multi-trunk tree where it shows off its orangish colored bark that contrasts beautifully with the blue foliage. To tree form, as the tree grows simply remove lower branches. Adding 6 to 12 inches in height and width per year with no pruning, at 10 years of age a specimen will reach around 6 to 8 feet tall and wide and maybe near twice that size at maturity. Size can be controlled by pruning the candles about halfway back in spring. Also a fine candidate for pom-pom topiary. An outstanding focal point specimen in sunny landscape borders and rock gardens.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to around 12 feet tall and wide at maturity, the Waterer Scots Pine is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny landscape borders or on hillsides, embankments or slopes. Also a nice accent tree in home foundation plants or as a privacy screen. A fine candidate for pom-pom topiary. A fine addition to conifer gardens, Asian gardens and rock gardens, Zen gardens, and blue theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  7 feet apart for a hedge; 14 feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Waterer Scots Pine is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. It has high drought tolerance when established. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic; leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots.
