Description

'Shawnee Brave' is a unique and spectacular Bald Cypress, characterized by its denser foliage and narrower growth habit compared to the species. It has a pyramidal form, reaching only 15 feet wide or so, and 40 to 60 feet tall. The height and width it develops will depend on soil moisture, as it grows larger in wet soils and smaller in average or drier soils. It is an excellent fit where space won't accommodate a larger variety. It has the same fluffy, bird-feather-like leaves that emerge light green in spring, maturing to rich green and then orange-brown shades in fall. It will grow in wet soils, even in standing water, as the species does in the Okefenokee Swamp, but is also quite drought-tolerant when established. A very easy-to-grow and long-lived North American native tree, Shawnee Brave is a lovely tree that brings outstanding texture and bright color to the landscape.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 40 to 60 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide, the Shawnee Brave Bald Cypress tree is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or in single or staggered rows to delineate a property line or line a driveway or street. Highly adaptable, it will thrive in wet to somewhat dry sites, making it an excellent choice for use in swampy areas or near lakes, streams, rivers, or other bodies of water, as well as for Xeriscape (low-water-need) applications. It can also be used to frame the corners of tall homes, and is perfect for use as a shade tree around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It is a fine addition to native plant gardens, conifer gardens, and wildlife gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  25 feet or more apart for space between trees, depending on soil moisture

Growing Preferences

Being a North American native tree, the Shawnee Brave Bald Cypress is highly adaptable and exceptionally easy to grow in a variety of soil types, including clay, and likes full sun to light shade. It thrives in both somewhat dry and wet soils, as well as in standing water. It will appreciate some supplemental water during prolonged periods of drought. Maintenance is minimal to none. Pruning isn't necessary. However, selective pruning for shaping is tolerated, or removing lower branches to expose more trunk is okay. Avoid pruning in the spring when the tree is emerging from dormancy. Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant.

Do keep in mind that it is one of a few deciduous conifers, meaning its needles will drop in the fall and regrow in the spring. But its fibrous copper and tan shedding bark provides interest during the winter and contrasts beautifully with the foliage during spring, summer, and fall.
