Description
A true gem, this is the single-trunk tree form of Abies koreana 'Silberperle', commonly known as the Silver Pearl Korean Fir. It gets its name from the white, pearl-like, resinous buds at the tips of every stem during fall and winter, and the silvery undersides of the rich green needles. Arranged in rounded whorls, the short needles are wider than other varieties, providing a unique and attractive texture in the garden year-round. It grows 18 to 24 inches tall and wide, sitting atop a single trunk, and may develop a pyramidal form with age if left unpruned. It is an eye-catching specimen for small garden spaces and containers, ideal for situating on patios and around other outdoor seating and living areas. In hot-summer climates, we suggest giving this one some filtered sun or shade during the early to midafternoon hours.
Mr. Horstman of Germany discovered Silver Pearl Fir.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Silver Pearl Korean Fir topiary tree is ideal for use as a focal point specimen in a small garden space or container. It is a fine accent in home foundation plantings, conifer gardens, and rock gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Use as a focal point specimen plant or two to frame an entryway
Growing Preferences
The Silver Pearl Korean Fir is easy to grow in damp to moist, well-drained soil of average fertility, and prefers full sun to part shade. We suggest some filtered sun or shade during the hot afternoon hours in hot-summer climates. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. Once established, water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture needs to be monitored more closely, especially during the summer. When the top two inches of soil are dry, provide the soil with water. No pruning is necessary.
