Description

A super cold hardy water bamboo that is one of the rare species which can handle areas where the water does not drain well. Like other forms of water bamboo it has air canals in the rhizomes and roots which allow it to grow in wet soils where other bamboos would suffer, although it will do best in well draining soil. Sometimes has distorted, shortened and swollen internodes. These solid stem bamboos are strong and flexible. They are also very resistant to splitting, making them very useful.

Note:  We have reports that Solid Stem Bamboo is growing in USDA Zone 5 where winter temps can go to -5 degrees F.

Growing Preferences

Solid Stem is a water bamboo that is easy to grow in any average, well-drained moist or consistently wet soil and full to mostly sun. It is a water bamboo that will tolerate poorly drained soil. When established, it will tolerate periods of dry weather, however, will appreciate an occasional deep soaking if the leaves begin to curl from drought stress.

How To Grow Bamboo Plants Indoors

Solid Stem Bamboo is a running bamboo, which means it spreads. Bamboo can be controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots. New shoots of some bamboo can also be used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year and, when they are "shooting," the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning or installing Bamboo Root Barrier are other methods to control spread.
