Description

From early summer through late summer, the Sombrero Salsa Red Coneflower features a profusion of flowers with a ring of overlapping petals in spicey orange-red shades surrounding a prominent darker orange-brown cone. Initially, the ray petals are rolled, which shows off the lighter underside. The flowers are held above dense mounds of dark green lance-shaped leaves on sturdy stems, making them excellent for cutting and use in floral arrangements. Butterflies and hummingbirds will enjoy the flowers and birds the seeds. At about 2 feet tall in bloom and equally as wide, Salsa Red is a dramatic and colorful accent in sunny to partially shaded smaller garden spaces or containers or stunning in groupings or mass plantings where space allows. No hot and sunny garden would be complete without coneflowers, and this one aims to please both you and the butterflies and birds with its uniquely colored flowers!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 24 to 26 inches tall and 16 to 22 inches wide, the Sombrero Salsa Red Coneflower is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and container gardens or grouped in sunny to partially shaded perennial and woodland borders. It is also a fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, bird gardens, cut flower gardens, red-themed gardens, and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  18 inches apart for mass planting; 36 inches or more apart for groupings

Growing Preferences

Coneflowers are very easy to grow in most moist but well-drained soil of average fertility in full sun or part shade. For best flowering, provide at least 5 hours of direct sun. As with many other perennial plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Heavy, dense clay soils should be amended with organic matter to improve drainage. No deadheading is necessary, though spent flowers can be removed if desired. Feed in spring with a good flower food or organic plant food.
