Description
Not only are the flowers beautiful, but Asclepias plants, commonly known as Swamp Milkweed or Butterfly Weed, are the only food source for the Monarch butterfly larva and, therefore, vital for the survival of these pollinators. The Soulmate Swamp Milkweed is a super-hardy and easy-to-grow near native perennial that gardeners can grow and enjoy in USDA Zones 3 to 8b (9 in cool-summer climates), which covers most of the country! Soulmate features abundant 2-inch clusters of intricately designed, vanilla-scented, deep mauve- to rose-pink flowers with white centers that will keep Monarchs and many other butterfly species and beneficial pollinators happy from mid to late summer. The flowers are also excellent for cutting and display in a vase or floral arrangement though we suggest leaving plenty on the plant for the butterflies. It prefers moist soils and as much sun as you can give it, and due to its compact habit, is ideal as an accent in small-space gardens or groupings where space allows. You might also be happy to know the deer and rabbits turn their nose up to it.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 36 to 48 inches tall and 24 inches wide or more, Soulmate Swamp Milkweed is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or in groupings in larger garden beds and borders. It is ideal for use in moist areas of the landscape but will also tolerate dry periods when established. It is a fine addition to butterfly gardens, bog gardens, perennial gardens, cottage gardens, and pink theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 24 inches apart for groupings; 4 feet or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Swamp Milkweed is exceptionally easy to grow and care for. It grows best in consistently moist soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Too much shade will diminish flowering. For best flowering, at least 4 hours of direct sunlight daily is suggested. Plant with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Feed in spring with an organic plant food.
