Description
Named for the nurseryman who discovered it growing in Washington State, the Spaan's Dwarf Shore Pine has a captivating, unique form as it ages that looks like coral growing underwater. It has a sturdy, upright, and open structure with layered, gently sweeping branches and gently twisting stems clothed with dense, very short, dark green needles, making it look like a coral reef. Its slow growth and more diminutive stature make Spaan's Dwarf a dramatic centerpiece in small garden spaces or for pompom topiary or bonsai and containers situated on or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where it is destined to be a conversation piece. It is widely adapted to most sites, provided the soil is well-drained and there's plenty of sun exposure. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Spaan's Dwarf Shore Pine is ideal for use as a specimen or in spaced groupings in sunny landscape borders and garden beds. It is also a fine addition to conifer gardens, native plant gardens, and wildlife gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen or in spaced groupings with trees at least 8 feet apart
Growing Preferences
Shore Pines are easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil with average to low fertility and full to mostly sun. When established, they are drought tolerant, but like most other coniferous evergreens, they do not like constantly soggy or wet soil. They do not require pruning, but they can be trimmed annually in late winter to maintain a smaller plant or for very interesting topiary forms. How To Prune Junipers & Other Conifers
