Description
A fragrant Snowball Viburnum that's a perfect fit for smaller gardens spaces, Spice Baby grows to only half the size of its parent, the Korean Spice Viburnum. Adored for its profusion of fragrant snowball-shaped flower clusters produced in abundance in spring, its colorful pink flower buds open to aromatic soft pink flowers aging to white that fill the garden with wonderful spicy-sweet perfume. Following the flowers, upright facing clusters of red berries and dark green suede-like foliage turning to glorious red shades add to the overall appeal of this attractive flowering shrub through the seasons. Make sure to plant this one near patios, decks, porches and other outdoor areas where the fragrance can be enjoyed from up close.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a rounded mound 4 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide, the Spice Baby Viburnum is ideal for use as a specimen, grouping or natural mid-height hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. Make sure to plant near patios, porches, decks and other outdoor living spaces where the pretty flowers and wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed from up close. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, white theme gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for hedge; 9 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Viburnum is very easy to grow in moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It prefers a loamy soil so amend heavy clay or poor soils with compost, bagged top soil or other organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants, it does not like constantly soggy or wet conditions. Very drought tolerant when established and we've seen no serious pest or disease problems. Deer haven't touched it in our gardens. We suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight for best flowering. Responds very well to pruning for shaping, size control and tree forming. Prune as needed immediately after flowering.
