Description

When viewed from close up, the foliage of Spiralis Cryptomeria, also known as "Granny's Ringlets," is one of the most visually unique conifers in our gardens. The plant forms an upright pyramid thickly clothed in evergreen foliage with needles that extraordinarily spiral around the thick branchlets, appearing like twisted ropes. A slower growing selection that is densely branched and globe-shaped when young, Spiralis will eventually develop a leader and a broad, upright habit to maybe 20 feet or more in height over time to provide a dramatic focal point in the landscape that is sure to be a conversation piece.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Spiralis Cryptomeria is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller gardens spaces or as an accent or corner plant in home foundation plantings or in containers. It can also be used as a hedge or privacy screen but will take time to develop. A fine addition to Asian theme gardens, conifer gardens and rock gardens.

Growing Preferences

Spiralis Japanese Cedar Cryptomeria is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. No pruning necessary!
