Description

Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society, the Spreading English Yew is an elegant evergreen shrub with fine texture and a sprawling and extremely wide-spreading habit of growth. Its branches and pendulous stems are clothed in greyish blue-green fern-like leaves which makes it such a great textural accent in the landscape. Over time the shrub will reach 3 to 4 feet tall spreading and sprawling up to 10 feet or more in width. It will grow in full sun or full shade and everything between, and is very low maintenance and long-lived to 150 years old, which makes it a heritage plant that can be enjoyed for many generations to come.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a spreading mound 3 to 4 feet tall and 10 feet or more in width, the Spreading English Yew can be mass planted but we think it's so beautiful that we suggest using it as a specimen, or, at most, use two to accentuate/frame an entryway. Three widely spaced plants make a fine grouping in larger landscape borders and full sun or full shade gardens, which makes it a fine choice under the canopy of large trees. Looks especially nice around garden ponds or in rock gardens where its pendulous branchlets will sprawl over boulders and walls. A fine addition to Asian gardens, perennial shade gardens, rock gardens, tropical look gardens, wildlife gardens, cottage gardens, and conifer gardens.

Spacing:  6 feet for mass plantings; 14 feet or more for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Spreading English Yew is easy to grow in full sun or full shade. It grows well in most any moist but well drained soil of average or better fertility but does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil. It doesn't require pruning however responds well to it for size control or shaping purposes. We've seen no serious disease or insect problems and it is a very deer resistant plant.
