Description

An oldie-but-goodie that has stood the test of time for good reasons, 'Stewartstonian' is a Gable Hybrid evergreen azalea developed for cold hardiness (-20F) and flower-power by the late Joseph Gable of Stewarts, Pennsylvania. In mid spring a profusion of brilliant orange-red flowers literally engulf the foliage - truly stunning! A medium-sized mounding shrub to 4 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide, it has handsome deep-green glossy leaves that turn a handsome chocolate-red color with the arrival of cold temperatures in late fall and winter. Stewartstonian Azalea is one of those evergreen flowering shrubs that puts on such a color show it will always have you, and the butterflies and hummingbirds, looking forward to spring. Excellent as a specimen, in groupings or as a colorful hedge.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a rounded mound 4 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide, the Stewartstonian Azalea is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings or mass plantings, or as a low hedge in partially shaded landscape and woodland borders and home foundation plantings. Budded and blooming branches serve very well for cutting to create stunning indoor floral arrangements. A fine addition to azalea gardens, orange or red theme gardens, Asian theme gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  3.5 to 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Evergreen Azaleas are easy to grow when planted right and in the right spot. They prefer a moist but well-drained and acidic soil that is rich in organic matter and part sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun is ideal. Evening sun is fine. Azaleas do not like wet feet so avoid planting them in sites where the soil stays constantly soggy or wet. Moderate drought tolerance when established.
