Description
A North American native holly that looks more like a boxwood than a holly, Strongbox Inkberry Holly (Ilex glabra) is noted for its tight, dense form, disease resistance, and durability. It forms a broad, rounded mound 2 to 3 feet tall and equally as wide, clothed in rich green leaves, with no need for pruning to maintain its dense form. As with boxwoods, it responds very well to trimming for geometric shapes, such as globes and squares, or as a low, formal hedge. It features small, inconspicuous flowers that butterflies and beneficial pollinators will appreciate, making it an excellent addition to native plant and pollinator gardens. Excellent for landscape borders, home foundation plantings, or in containers, unlike other Inkberry cultivars, Strongbox stays full to the ground.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With a mature height of only 2 to 3 feet tall and an equal width, depending on pruning, the Strongbox Inkberry is ideal for use as a specimen in small garden spaces and pots, or in groupings, or as a hedge in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. It is a fine addition to native gardens, pollinator gardens, formal gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 2 feet apart for hedges; 4 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Strongbox Inkberry Holly is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil with average fertility and full to mostly sun for the best foliage density. We recommend at least five hours of sunlight daily. As with many other plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. It responds very well to trimming for geometrical shapes and formal hedges.
