If you like the colors of fine wine, you'll love Summer Wine, an improved Physocarpus, commonly known as Ninebark. And this is the rare single-trunk tree-form version! A super-tough, easy-care, and fast-growing cross hybrid of our native species, this tree form version features a 6 to 8-foot-wide, rounded canopy with arching, cascading branches atop a straight trunk. The stems are clothed in maple-like, wine-purple leaves that turn to wine-red in fall. In late spring to early summer, abundant domed clusters of contrasting pink-tinted white flowers appear, followed by inflated burgundy-red seed heads. Layers of peeling red-brown bark on the branches and stems, hence the name "ninebark," take the stage during winter.
