Description

If you like the colors of fine wine, you'll love Summer Wine, an improved Physocarpus, commonly known as Ninebark. And this is the rare single-trunk tree-form version! A super-tough, easy-care, and fast-growing cross hybrid of our native species, this tree form version features a 6 to 8-foot-wide, rounded canopy with arching, cascading branches atop a straight trunk. The stems are clothed in maple-like, wine-purple leaves that turn to wine-red in fall. In late spring to early summer, abundant domed clusters of contrasting pink-tinted white flowers appear, followed by inflated burgundy-red seed heads. Layers of peeling red-brown bark on the branches and stems, hence the name "ninebark," take the stage during winter. A trouble-free and colorful beauty that deserves a spot as a focal point specimen in every landscape where it will grow. USDA Zones 3a-7b. Cold hardy to -40°F.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 as wide, the single-trunk Summer Wine Ninebark Tree is ideal for use as a focal point specimen in sunny landscape borders, garden beds, and home foundation plantings, Where space allows it can be planted in spaced groupings, or used in rows to line a drive or walkway. It is a fine addition to native plant gardens, butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens, purple theme gardens, cottage gardens, and xeric gardens (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  10 feet apart for space between trees

Growing Preferences

Summer Wine Ninebark is easy to grow in a wide range of soils, preferring a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. It is very drought tolerant when established and will grow in rocky soils. For the best foliage color, we suggest full to mostly sun; however, plants will tolerate some light shade. If desired, prune for shaping purposes after flowering in spring. Like hydrangeas, some of the oldest stems can be cut back to near their origin every few years, invigorating the bush by creating new, fresh stems.
