Description
Note: All of our 1 gallon size Clematis vines are trellised 2 year old plants
We grow this deliciously fragrant fall-blooming vine on a fence in our gardens, and by fall about a 20 foot section of the fence disappears in masses of aromatic, sweetly fragrant, cruciform-shaped white blossoms that cover the foliage. The flowers of the Sweet Autumn Clematis are followed by very attractive fluffy seed heads that persist through fall. Leathery, dark green leaves are attractive through the season on extremely vigorous, deciduous, twining vines perfect for growing on fences, pergolas, arbors, arches, rails and posts. The vines can climb up to 25 feet in height with support. With nothing to climb on the vines will sprawl along the ground as a dense ground cover.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Climbing up to 25 feet high and spreading 2 feet or more, the Sweet Autumn Clematis is ideal for growing on fences, pergolas, arbors, trellises, arches, mailbox pots, obelisks, poles, lamp posts and other structures that provide support. A fine addition to fragrance and sensory gardens, white theme gardens, Clematis gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3 to 6 feet apart on fences and trellises or 1 vine on each post of an arbor or pergola
Growing Preferences
The Sweet Autumn Clematis is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to mostly shade. Though it tolerates dry periods when established, it will appreciate an occasional watering in prolonged periods of dry weather. Maintenance is easy...cut the plant back to about 2 feet above the ground in early spring as leaf buds begin to show, removing all dead stems above the buds.
