Description

Another spectacular Ackerman cross hybrid that is both cold hardy and fragrant,‘Sweet October’ Camellia features abundant flowers that will fill the garden with a pleasing, honey-scented aroma in fall. The single flowers have white petals that surround a boss of golden stamens. A vigorous grower to 12 feet or more in height over time, the upright branching makes Sweet October a great choice for a small tree, privacy screen, corner plant, or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall).

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, and kept smaller with a little annual pruning, the Sweet October Camellia is ideal for use as an accent, grouping, espalier or hedge in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. As she grows taller lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive and colorful evergreen tree. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, white theme gardens, camellia gardens, cottage gardens and partially shaded woodland borders.

Suggested Spacing:  5-6' feet apart for solid hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
