Description
Tall Guy Arborvitae is a moderate to fast-growing selection that forms a dense, narrow column only 2 to 3 feet wide and 10 to 12 feet tall when all grown up. Unlike other narrow selections, Tall Guy doesn't form multiple leaders at the top of the plant. It features attractive, bright green foliage and is low-maintenance, requiring no pruning to keep its dense form. It is excellent for use in tight spaces and framing corners in home foundation plantings. It is perfect for an evergreen privacy screen or tall hedge where space is limited. It is also a lovely contrast plant as a centerpiece in pots, planters, and other containers or seasonal or perennial flower gardens. It is cold hardy to -30F in Zone 4, and heat hardy to Zone 8b in the South.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With its upright habit and narrow conical form of 10 to 12 feet tall and only 2 to 3 feet wide, Tall Guy Arborvitae is ideal for a mid-height privacy screen or a tall hedge where space is limited. It is also excellent as a vertical accent in garden beds or in home foundation plantings. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens and can be lightly trimmed for a tighter look for formal landscapes.
Suggested Spacing: 2.5 feet apart for solid privacy screen or hedges; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Tall Guy Arborvitae is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility, including clay soil, in full sun to light shade. For best performance, we suggest a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Maintenance is minimal. No pruning or trimming is required unless a more formal look is desired.
