Description
If you're looking for a tall but narrow hedge or focal point and/or want to attract birds, the Tall Hedge Buckthorn aims to please. A columnar, narrow-growing shrub that reaches 12 feet in height and 3 feet in width at maturity, it is ideal for creating a hedge or privacy screen in limited spaces. It is also excellent for a formal accent that puts an exclamation point on any small garden space. Its columnar form is densely clothed in oval-shaped, lustrous, dark green leaves that turn attractive golden yellow shades in the fall. Inconspicuous greenish-white flowers in late spring are followed by abundant, conspicuous red and black berries that the birds will surely see and appreciate. Extremely cold resistant to -50F, and easy to grow in USDA Zones 3-7, give it moist but well-drained soil and five or more hours of sunlight daily. It is exceptionally low-maintenance and drought-tolerant when established, and we hear it has high salt tolerance.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 12 feet tall and about 3 feet wide, the TallHedge Buckthorn is ideal for a vertical accent in smaller garden spaces and home foundation plantings. It is perfect for framing entryways or as a narrow hedge where space is limited, such as around patios and other outdoor living sitting spaces. A fine addition to formal gardens, coastal gardens, rock gardens, Asian and Zen gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Growing Preferences
Buckthorns are easy to grow in almost any moist but well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun to partial shade. It is drought tolerant when established, and we hear it has good salt tolerance. Like many other ornamental plants, it does not like constantly soggy or wet conditions. We've seen no serious pest or disease problems. Pruning is not required for this species; however, a stray branch can be removed at any time. If you want to grow it as a clipped hedge, prune it in late winter to early spring before new growth emerges. Feed in early spring with a good shrub and tree-type fertilizer once a year.
