Rhamnus frangula 'Columnaris'

A columnar, narrow-growing shrub that reaches 12 feet in height and 3 feet in width at maturity, it is ideal for creating a hedge or privacy screen in limited spaces. It is also excellent for a formal accent that puts an exclamation point on any small garden space. Its columnar form is densely clothed in oval-shaped, lustrous, dark green leaves that turn attractive golden yellow shades in the fall. Inconspicuous greenish-white flowers in late spring are followed by abundant, conspicuous red and black berries that the birds will surely see and appreciate. Extremely cold resistant to -50F, and easy to grow in USDA Zones 3-7, give it moist but well-drained soil and five or more hours of sunlight daily. It is exceptionally low-maintenance and drought-tolerant when established, and we hear it has high salt tolerance.
