Description
A remarkably unique and attractive coniferous evergreen tree, 'Tempelhof' is a Japanese White Pine with brilliant blue foliage color and profuse cone production at an early age. It has a slender, irregular pyramidal habit with a well-defined central axis and laterally arranged branches that reach upwards to 20 feet tall and 10 feet wide at maturity. That said, it can be kept smaller with pruning, often done to create exciting pom pom topiaries. Its branches are adorned with attractive, slightly curved needles in bundles of five. The needles are silvery blue on the upper side and green on the lower side, giving the tree a decorative, glaucous look. Moreover, this selection displays a profusion of colorful, pink to purple cones in clusters at a young age, which are a fantastic color contrast to the blue foliage. Whether left to grow naturally or pruned artistically, the outstanding texture and soothing color of the Tempelhof Japanese White Pine make it an eye-catching specimen tree in sunny areas, even in coastal areas, due to its salt tolerance.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 20 feet tall and 6 to 10 wide, the Tempelhof Japanese White Pine is ideal for use as an attractive specimen in any sunny and well-draining location. With pruning, you can create unique pom pom topiary forms for use as eye-catching focal point specimens in the landscape. It is a fine addition to Asian theme and conifer gardens and is suitable for growing in large pots.
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen
Growing Preferences
Though drought-tolerant when established, the Tempelhof Japanese White Pine grows best in moist but well-drained fertile soil in full sun and will tolerate some light afternoon shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Constantly soggy soil can cause problems with the roots. It does not require pruning; however, the candles on this pine can be pruned by up to 50 percent of their length to control the size of the tree, and branches can be selectively removed to form very interesting and unique topiary forms.
