Description

This David Austin English Shrub Rose creation was named after The Alnwick Garden in Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, England, a prominent garden known for its rose displays. From spring through the first frost in fall, The Alnwick Shrub Rose displays abundant clusters of gorgeous, many-petaled, cupped blooms in shades of soft pink. As the flowers open, the centers are pink with soft pink outer petals, gradually fading to soft pink overall. Held aloft atop sturdy stems, the 120-petaled blooms exude a rich, Old World fragrance with raspberry notes.  A very healthy variety with plentiful gloosy green foliage, it makes a vigorous, upright, bushy shrub to 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide, making it a good fit for small garden spaces and containers that can be situated on or around patios and other outdoor sitting areas where the pretty flowers and wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed from close up.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide, the Alnwick English Shrub Rose is ideal for an accent, groupings, or as a hedge in sunny to partially shaded borders and garden beds. Its diminutive stature makes it a good fit in containers situated on or around patios, decks, and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It is a fine addition to cottage gardens, pink theme gardens, antique and old-fashioned gardens, and fragrance and sensory gardens.

Growing Preferences

The Alnwick English Shrub Rose is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average or better fertility and full sun or partial shade for the best flowering. As with all other roses, morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves, however this one will do fine with some filtered sun during the afternoon hours. Flowering will be best if the plant receives at least 5 hours of direct sun during the day.
