Description
A North American native flowering perennial that will grow almost anywhere in the country (USDA Zones 4-9), the Tiny Dancer Helen's Flower features loads of cute, eye-catching daisies with purple-brown, round cones surrounded by a skirt of bright yellow petals, resembling hundreds of tiny dancers above the foliage. The flowers are absolute butterfly magnets and are excellent for cutting and long-lasting display in a vase or floral arrangements. Easy to grow in full sun and drought-tolerant once established, Tiny Dancer is a perfect addition to wildflower gardens, perennial gardens, and sunny woodland borders, where it will self-sow to form a patch.
Interesting Note
The other common name for this plant is Sneezeweed, but not because it'll make you sneeze by simply being in the garden, it won't. This common name is based on the former use of its dried leaves in making snuff, inhaled to cause sneezing that would supposedly rid the body of evil spirits.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 24 to 30 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, Tiny Dancer Helen's Flower is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers. But where it shines most is in wildflower, meadow, and perennial gardens, and sunny woodland borders, where it will naturally self-sow to form a colony or drift. It pairs exceptionally well with ornamental grasses and other late-summer to fall-blooming perennials. A fine addition to wildflower gardens, native plant gardens, butterfly gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, yellow theme gardens, cottage gardens, perennial gardens, wildlife gardens, and xeric gardens (low water needs when established).
Suggested Spacing: 15 to 18 inches apart for mass plantings; 36 inches or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Tiny Dancer Helen's Flower is very easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and with six or more hours of sunlight daily for optimal flowering and overall performance. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Plants can be cut back after going dormant for winter or in late winter. Leave spent flowers on the plants until they drop seeds if you want them to self-sow to form a colony or drift. Feed as directed on the product label with a good flower food or organic flower food.
