Description

A tough yet very pretty North American native flowering shrub, the Tiny Wine Ninebark, a Physocarpus, grows to approximately half the size of the species. It forms an upright, rounded mound 3 to 5 feet tall and equally wide. It features crimson new leaves that mature to deep wine-purple and vibrant red shades in fall. In late spring to early summer, abundant, rounded clusters of pink buds at the tips of the stems open to white flowers that butterflies, beneficial pollinators, and hummingbirds are sure to appreciate. The birds will enjoy clusters of decorative red berries following the flowers. Easy to grow, super cold-hardy to -40°F, and drought-tolerant, Tiny Wine is a fine accent in smaller garden spaces or when used in groups or as a natural hedge in larger landscape borders.

The name “ninebark” derives from the peeling of mature bark, which makes it look like there are multiple layers of bark on the plant. It is a very appealing winter effect.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a rounded mound to 3 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide, the Tiny Wine Ninebark is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or groupings or as a natural low hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. It also makes a lovely accent in home foundation plantings. It looks especially nice when paired with other plants that have light colored foliage. It is a fine addition to white or purple-themed gardens, pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, and xeric gardens (low-water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  3 feet for solid hedges; 6 feet or more for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Tiny Wine Ninebark is easy to grow in a wide range of soils, preferring moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. It is very drought-tolerant when established. For the best foliage color, we recommend full to mostly sun, with six or more hours of direct sunlight daily. If desired, prune for shaping purposes after flowering in spring.
