Description

At only 2 to 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide when all grown up, Musa 'Truly Tiny' is a diminutive Banana Tree that lives up to its name—or should we say down to its name? We've heard a few reports that it will survive outdoors growing in the ground in Zone 8. However, for gardeners north of Zone 9, we suggest growing this little guy in a container that can be brought indoors when temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing during winter. Though much smaller in stature than its larger growing cousins, it has large green leaves blotched and speckled in maroon-red. Will it produce bananas? Yes, provided it has a long enough hot season to make them, which generally means mid to south Florida. It thrives in a sunny to partially shaded location, however the red coloration is stronger with more sun. We suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. This is one of those outstanding plants that will not go unnoticed in the garden or on the patio!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and 2 wide, the Truly Tiny Banana is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in garden beds and seasonal flower beds. It is also perfect for use as a centerpiece in combination container gardens that can be overwintered indoors in cooler climates where temperatures drop below freezing in winter. It is especially nice around swimming pools and ponds, patios, decks, and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It is a fine addition to tropical gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  4 feet or more apart in spaced groupings

Growing Preferences

The Truly Tiny Banana is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun to partial shade. Remember it prefers moist soil but doesn't like constantly waterlogged soil or standing water. When growing in containers, choose a pot of 15 inches or more in top diameter with a drainage hole(s) and use a quality potting soil or potting mix or a 50/50 combination thereof. In colder climates where temperatures drop below freezing, container-grown plants can be moved indoors during the winter.
