Description

All of our Clematis vines are trellised 2-year-old plants in a 1-gallon pot.

A more recent introduction from the Guernsey-based breeding program, the Tumaini Clematis produce a whopping abundance of large, very pretty flowers with soft-violet pointed petals and a contrasting rosy mauve bar down the center of each surrounding a cluster of contrasting deep-red anthers. The flowers start coming in late spring and rebloom through early fall. It is a superb plant for small garden beds or containers, where it can be grown on a short obelisk or trellis or as a spreader, filler, or spiller plant. Plant this beauty on or around patios where its beautiful flowers can be enjoyed through the season from up close.

Clematis Tumaini was named to recognize the outstanding charitable work undertaken in Tanzania by the Guernsey-based charity, The Tumaini Fund.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Climbing 3 to 4 feet in height with a spread of 2 to 3 feet or more, Tumaini Clematis can be grown as a climber or spreader. It is ideal for growing on a trellis or obelisk in small garden spaces or containers on or around patios and other outdoor sitting spaces where the flowers can be enjoyed up close. It is also great for a border or meandering through shrubs and other plants and is a fine addition to Clematis gardens, purple theme gardens, cut flower gardens, and butterfly and hummingbird gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  2-3 feet apart to cover short fences or trellises or as a groundcover

Growing Preferences

The Tumaini Clematis is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil with average fertility and partial shade. It appreciates some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon when the sunlight is most intense. For best flowering and overall performance, we suggest a minimum of 3 hours of direct sunlight daily. Though it tolerates dry periods when established, it will appreciate occasional supplemental water during prolonged periods of dry weather. See the pruning instructions just below.

Clematis Pruning Group 3

Clematis in group 3 consists of late-flowering species that bloom from summer into fall. This group flowers on the last 2 to 3 feet of the current season's growth (new wood). They are easy to prune because you do not need to maintain any old wood. In February or March, cut each stem to a height of 6 inches to 1 foot. Always leave two good buds below where you make your cut. New growth will emerge from these buds to produce the current season's vines and blooms.
