Description
An extremely robust and vigorous False Indigo, Baptisia 'Twilite' was selected from a controlled cross by breeder Dr. Jim Ault, the Director of Ornamental Plant Research at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Exceptionally fast-growing and quick to mature, Twilite reaches about 4 to 5 feet tall and wide and produces up to 100 of its beautiful lupine-like flowering racemes in just three years. The long-lasting, bicolor, smokey-violet colored flowers with yellow keels come in late spring to early summer over about 5 weeks. After the flowers come ornamental seed pods that extend the season of interest into fall. Kids will love to shake and rattle the seed pods, which are also excellent for cutting and displaying in floral arrangements. The blooms rise on sturdy stems above the rounded vase of dense, very pretty, blue-green, trifoliate foliage, which stays spotless all season. Its dense, bushy, shrub-like habit, adaptability to poor soil and drought, and long lifespan make Twilite ideal as an accent or grouping in sunny perennial and landscape borders.
Landscape / Garden Uses
Growing 4.5 to 5 feet tall and equally wide, Twilight Baptisia is ideal for an accent or grouping in perennial and meadow gardens and landscape borders. It is also suitable for growing in large containers. It is a fine addition to butterfly gardens, cut flower gardens, native plant gardens, pollinator gardens, meadow gardens, cottage gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Growing Preferences
Twilite Baptisia is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. For best flowering, we suggest at least 5 hours or more of sunlight. It tolerates poor soils and has high drought tolerance when established. Constantly soggy or wet soil can cause problems with the roots, so make sure the planting site is well-draining. Plants can be cut back near the ground in late winter before new spring growth emerges.
