Description

As its name suggests, Magnolia tripelta, commonly known as the Umbrella Magnolia or Umbrella Tree, features whorls of large, elongated leaves, 12 to 24 inches long and up to 10 inches wide, that are arranged in a pattern reminiscent of an umbrella. It is a beautiful North American native tree that typically grows to about 25 to 30 feet tall and wide in moist but well-drained soils of average fertility. In late spring through early summer, it features large, 6-petaled flowers, six to ten inches in diameter, with elongated, white petals surrounding a cluster of pinkish-purple stamens. The flowers are followed by attractive cones of pink berries, which the birds and other wildlife will appreciate. We've seen no serious problems with pests or disease, and the deer turn their nose up at it. It is one of those captivating trees that is sure to create a lush, tropical effect in the landscape and be a conversation piece.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing on average to 30 feet tall and maybe as wide, the Umbrella Magnolia is ideal for use as a specimen tree in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. It tends to prefer some filtered sun during the midafternoon in hot summer climates. It is lovely around ponds, streams, lakes, and other bodies of water. It is a fine addition to white-themed gardens, native gardens, tropical-look gardens, pollinator and wildlife gardens, and cottage gardens.

Growing Preferences

Umbrella Magnolia is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average or better fertility, including well-drained clay, and full sun or part shade. In hot-summer climates, it will appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours when the sunlight is most intense. Avoid constantly soggy or wet soils, as well as prolonged dry soil. Pruning usually isn't necessary; however, stray branches can be pruned after flowering. Feed in spring with a mild organic plant food or a well-balanced shrub and tree food containing iron and/or sulfur.
