Description

Sporting some of the most intensely colored flowers of any Phlox subulata we've grown in our gardens, the Violet Pinwheels Creeping Phlox forms a spreading carpet of emerald green foliage that is smothered in extremely vivid, violet-purple flowers in spring. In the South, it blooms early to mid-spring. Very easy to grow, it is stunning as a low border or in groupings or mass plantings on sunny slopes and embankments. Violet Pinwheels Phlox is one of those plants that will always have you looking forward to its amazing spring flower show.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 4 to 5 inches tall and 24 to 36 inches wide, the Violet Pinwheels Creeping Phlox is ideal for a low border around patios, garden beds, home foundation plantings, and along paths and walkways. It is truly stunning in groupings or mass plantings on embankments, hillsides, and slopes, or to drape over walls. Its size is perfect for smaller garden spaces or as a soil cover in container gardens. Flowering bulbs will pop right through it in spring and summer. It is a fine addition to blue or purple theme gardens, cottage gardens, and rock gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  18 to 24 inches apart for mass plantings or solid borders;  48 inches or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Violet Pinwheels Creeping Phlox is exceptionally easy to grow in various soils. It prefers moist, well-drained soil; however, it grows well in sandy or gravely soils and tolerates dry exposures better than most other Phlox species. Constantly soggy soils can be problematic. The best flowering is in full sun. Plant it with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Feed in spring with an organic plant food.
