Description
Note: All of our 1-gallon-size Clematis vines are trellised or staked 2-year-old plants
If you're looking to attract late-season butterflies and other beneficial pollinators, the Virgin's Bower Vine is a North American native Clematis that will get the job done! Similar in habit and appearance to Sweet Autumn Clematis, it is a vigorous vine that explodes with clouds of cute, star-shaped, sweetly fragrant white flowers in late summer, well into fall. Following the flowers are equally abundant and attractive, fluffy-looking, white seed heads, hence one of its common names, Old Man's Beard. Reaching up to 20 feet high or long, we grow it along the top of a fence, and it is also excellent for pergolas, trellises, poles, obelisks, and any other structures that will support it. The toothed, trifoliate green leaves are attractive as well.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Climbing up to 20 feet high and spreading 3 to 6 feet or more wide, the Virgin's Bower Vine is ideal for growing on fences, pergolas, arbors, trellises, arches, mailbox pots, obelisks, poles, lamp posts, and other structures that provide support. It is a fine addition to fragrance and sensory gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, white theme gardens, Clematis gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3 to 6 feet apart on fences, trellises, or against a wall; One vine on each post of an arbor or pergola
Growing Preferences
The Virgin's Bower Vine is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average or better fertility, and it prefers full sun to mostly shade. Though it tolerates short dry periods when established, it will appreciate an occasional watering in prolonged periods of dry weather. As with other Cl;ematis in Pruning Group 3, cut the plant back to about 1 to 2 feet above the ground in early spring as leaf buds begin to show, removing all dead stems above the buds.
