Description

If you've always wanted a Redwood tree but haven't had the room for a gaint meet 'Von Martin', a dwarf selection growing at 1/4 the rate of the species, if that. Adding maybe 6 or so inches in height per year, it forms a dense pyramid to about 10 feet tall and 8 feet wide at the base when grown up. Some sources say less that 10 feet tall but we've seen photos of specimens that are 8 to 10 feet, so that's what we're going with. It features soothingly scented foliage that emerges light green in spring maturing to medium greyish blue-green in summer developing a handsome bronze tint during the cool season. A charming specimen in smaller garden spaces and home foundation plantings or groupings where space allows, Von Martin is sure to be a conversation piece. USDA Zones: 6a-9b  Find Your Zone

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Von Martin Dwarf Giant Redwood is ideal for use as a specimen in small garden spaces and home foundation plantings or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where it's sure to be a conversation starter. It can also be planted in spaced groupings at 8 feet or more apart or two can be used to frame an entrance. A fine addition to conifer gardens, around garden ponds and other bodies of water, rock gardens and bird gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  8 feet apart for spaced groupings

Growing Preferences

The Von Martin Dwarf Giant Redwood is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained, humusy soil and full to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Though it will tolerate dry spells when established, young trees will appreciate a consistently moist soil, especially during hot and dry weather. Maintenance is minimal to none...just plant and watch it grow. Pruning isn't necessary, however it responds well to it at almost any time of year for shaping purposes. Avoid pruning in the spring when the tree is emerging from dormancy.
