A truly spectacular show-stopper in full spring bloom, 'Vulcan' is a tulip-type Magnolia tree featuring large furry buds on nearly every stem of the tree during winter that open to enormous cup-and-saucer shaped blooms up to 12 inches across in early to mid spring. Depending on temperatures and sun exposure, the petals on the luscious looking fragrant flowers can range from a hot to dark rosy pink to dark ruby or purple-red. Sometimes there'll be different color shades on the same tree at the same time or from one year to the next. Starts blooming at a young age. Whatever the color shade, these gorgeous blooms are a painters dream flower. Clothed in large, handsome green leaves that turn to golden yellow shades in fall, Vulcan has a distinctively upright in form reaching 15 to 20 feet tall and 10 to 12 feet wide or so when all grown up, making it a good fit for small or large landscape spaces. A hardy and long-lived tree, we've seen no serious problems with pests or disease on this one and the deer turn their nose up to it.

Introduced by Jury Nursery in New Zealand, 'Vulcan' is a cross between M. campellii var. mollicomata 'Larnath' and M. liliiflora.

Vulcan Magnolia is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained acidic soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It prefers full sun for best flowering, however will handle some partial shade. We suggest as least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day for best flowering and overall performance. Avoid constantly soggy or wet soils. In alkaline soils, apply soil sulfur and/or chelated iron to increase acidity for deep greening of foliage and heavier flowering. Pruning usually isn't necessary however stray or damaged branches can be pruned immediately after flowering in spring. Feed after flowering in spring with a mild organic plant food or a well-balanced shrub and tree food containing iron and/or sulfur.
