Description

Carya aquatica, commonly known as Water Hickory, is named as such due to its ability to thrive in wet areas of the landscape, particularly around ponds, streams, swamps, and other wet environments. It grows equally as well in landscape areas with average soil moisture. It is a large tree that grows twice as tall as it is wide, reaching heights of 80 to 100 feet and widths of 40 to 50 feet when fully grown. Its canopy is clothed in glossy, dark green, compound leaves, each having 7 to 15 lance-shaped, curved leaflets. The foliage turns golden yellow when cooler temperatures arrive in fall. It produces non-showy flowers in spring that are followed by nuts that ducks and other birds will enjoy. The smooth, light grey to brown bark becomes shaggy and red-tinged with age, adding to the tree's overall appeal. It is a fine specimen shade tree or a grouping in the landscape, and it thrives in sunny to partially shaded woodland borders.

Wildlife Benefits

Ducks and other birds enjoy the nuts produced by Water Hickory. It is a larval host to Luna moths, funeral dagger moths, and giant regal moths, and supports Hickory Horndevil larvae.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 80 to 100 feet tall and 40 to 50 feet wide, the Water Hickory is ideal for use around the home and in parks or other properties that provide the space it needs to grow. It is an excellent shade tree for around the home and outdoor living areas. It is also lovely in sunny to partially shaded woodland borders and in areas of the landscape that tend to stay moist to wet, and swampy areas around lakes, streams, and other bodies of water. However, it thrives equally well in average landscape soil conditions. It is a fine addition to the bog gardens, swamps, wildlife gardens, and native gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  55+ feet for space between trees

Growing Preferences

The Water Hickory is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and five or more hours of sunlight daily. While it thrives in sites with average moisture, it also thrives in wet sites around ponds, swamps, streams, rivers, and other bodies of water.
