Description

Originally discovered by Edwin Smits in Germany, Cedrus deodara 'Pendula' is the rare and highly attractive weeping form of Deodar Cedar. The growth habit and form will vary depending on how and where you want to grow it. When left alone to grow naturally it will form a shrub-like tree with wide spreading weeping branches that is a good fit for medium to larger landscape spaces. With staking and and occasional pruning it can be trained to a more narrow weeping form 10 to 15 feet in height and 4 to 8 feet wide, making it ideal for use as a specimen in smaller spaces. Either way, it is a dramatically beautiful and eye-catching star in the landscape. Easy to grow in a well-drained soil and plenty of sun in USDA Zones 6a-9b.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Whether left to grow naturally and having a broader form, or more upright and narrow by staking and with minor pruning, the Weeping Deodar Cedar is ideal for use as a specimen in small to large garden or large landscape borders. Really nice in rock and boulder gardens or around garden ponds or other bodies of water. Also nice to frame entryways or the corners of  homes and other structures. Young trees can be grown in large containers but might eventually need transplanting to the landscape. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens and Asian theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  Best as a specimen

Growing Preferences

When planted right and in the right spot, the Weeping Deodar Cedar is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. Established trees have good drought tolerance. As with so many other coniferous evergreens, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Good drainage is essential. A little shade is tolerated however trees won't be as full. Does not require pruning however responds well to it for size control and shaping purposes. Can be trained to grow more upright/vertical using a single stake when young.
