Description
Originating in Japan, the Weeping Veitch Fir is a fascinating beauty with a slender upright habit densely cloaked with weeping side branches. What's really interesting and dramatic about this selection, it may first grow at an upright angle in one direction, then in the other. We love the irregular form, however, if you'd like a more straight look, the trunk can be staked when young. The pendulous branches are clothed in soft-looking, glossy, dark green needles having silvery undersides. New growth is an attractive bright green and a profusion of purple cones provide extra appeal. An eye-catching specimen for use in rock or conifer gardens, home foundation plantings, or anywhere in the sunny landscape you want an outstanding focal point that doesn't require a lot of space.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Weeping Veitch Fir can grow to 15 to 25 feet tall and 6 feet or so wide at the base, which makes it ideal for use as a specimen where height is needed but space is limited in sunny landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens and Asian theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Best as specimen or use two to frame an entryway
Growing Preferences
The Weeping Veitch Fir is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. Light shade is tolerated. For best overall performance, we suggest 6 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. If a straighter look is desired, young trees can be staked.
