Description
If you're looking to add a dramatic taste of the tropics to your gardens or patio, it doesn't get much better than Brugmansia, commonly known as Angel's Trumpet. This is Brugmansia suaveolens, the species known for its white flowers. It is a vigorous, shrubby, tropical flowering plant that can be grown as a shrub or, by removing its lower branches, to form a small tree. A hardy tropical plant, it can be grown year-round outdoors in zones 8a to 11. North of Zone 8a, it can be grown in pots for overwintering indoors. Through summer and into fall, the White Angels Trump features large, fragrant, trumpet-shaped, white blooms from 8 to 12 inches long that hang downward from stems on an irregular, round shrub or small tree that might reach 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, depending on climate and pruning. In tropical climates, it can grow up to 15 feet tall and wide. Plants growing in pots may reach half to two-thirds of their standard size, depending on the size of the container. A large plant can produce 100 or more flowers at a time. Large and lush green leaves also contribute to the tropical effect in a garden.
If temperatures in your area drop below 15°F during winter, we recommend growing this one in a container that can be brought indoors during the cold season. There are more details on overwintering indoors below under Growing Preferences.
Note: Avoid ingesting the flowers, leaves, and seeds of Brugmansia as they are known to be toxic to people and pets.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide, maybe taller in tropical climates, the White Angel's Trumpet is ideal as a specimen in sunny landscape borders or garden beds. In Zones 8a-11, it can be grown outdoors year-round in the ground. North of Zone 8b, it is best grown in pots that can be brought indoors during the colder winter months and placed back outdoors in spring. It can also be grown as a houseplant indoors with ample sunlight and humidity. Great for display around garden ponds, pools, and other bodies of water. A fine addition to perennial gardens, tropical-themed gardens, and white-themed gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Brugmansia thrives in a moist, well-drained, organically rich soil and six or more hours of sunlight daily. Thriving in heat and tolerating humidity with no problems, it will tolerate short dry periods but is most happy in consistently moist soil. In zones 9 through 11, the plant typically remains evergreen. In Zone 8, outdoor plants will lose their leaves for winter, and we suggest several inches of straw or shredded wood mulch as insulation in case temperatures drop below 20°F or so. In Zones north of 8a, it is best to grow this one in containers that can be brought indoors during the winter. Maintenance is minimal. Prune annually in spring after new growth begins to emerge.
Tips For Overwintering Angel's Trumpet Brugmansia Plants Indoors
As mentioned, in zones north of USDA Zone 8a, this Brugmansia is not cold-hardy; therefore, it is best grown in a pot that can be overwintered in an unheated space, such as a garage, basement, or cold frame greenhouse, where temperatures will not drop below freezing. Too, if you are growing Brugmansia in a pot in Zone 8a, the plant's roots will be more exposed to the colder air temperatures, so you'll want to overwinter it indoors as well.
You'll want to move your potted Brugmansia plant indoors before any freezing temperatures are expected. Ensure the temperature in the interior space to which you move the plant ranges between 30 and 45°F. Before bringing the plant indoors, cease fertilizing it by July and reduce watering in September. Doing this will gradually force the plant into a dormant state as the temperatures cool. Before bringing the plant indoors, cut it back by one-third of its size. For example, if the plant is 6 feet tall, cut it back to around 4 feet tall. This helps prevent damage when moving and also reduces moisture loss due to transpiration.
While indoors, check soil moisture frequently and provide enough water to maintain a damp to lightly moist soil. Once all chances of frost or freezing temperatures have passed in the spring, and nighttime temperatures consistently stay above 40 degrees, the plant can be moved back outdoors. When you see new growth begin to emerge, you can resume feeding. We suggest feeding with a slow-release granular fertilizer, such as Osmocote, or a water-soluble plant food, like Miracle-Gro. Whatever fertilizer you use, ensure it is specifically listed for use on potted plants and follow the instructions on the product label for proper use.
