Description
An extremely popular variety and one of our all-time favorites that has stood the test of time for many good reasons, 'Wide Brim' is a classic, mid-size Hosta with lots of character and substance. Its slug-resistant, large, generously puckered, heart-shaped, dark to mid-green leaves sport broad, irregular butter-yellow margins that mature to creamy white as the season progresses. In mid to late summer, abundant, beautiful, soft-lavender flowers atop scapes 24 inches high contrast wonderfully with the foliage and will surely be appreciated by hummingbirds and butterflies. Though we have this one growing in the shade in our gardens, we hear from some of our northern gardening friends that Wide Brim tolerates more sun than other hosta varieties. A vigorous grower, Wide Brim forms a lush, compact mound that is 16 inches tall and 3 feet wide, which makes it an excellent accent or grouped in shady garden beds and home foundation plantings.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a mound to 16 inches tall and 3 feet wide, the Wide Brim Hosta Lily is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, massed as a groundcover, or as a border along walkways and paths in shady landscape borders. We have no problem suggesting its use in home foundation plantings. It is perfect under large shade trees, decks, covered porches, and any other shady location. Don't think you have any shade? Look on the east side of your home. Excellent for use in pots, planters, and other containers and a fine addition to mixed hosta gardens, hummingbird gardens, woodland gardens, and white theme gardens.

Growing Preferences
The Wide Brim Hosta Lily is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and shade or part shade. Morning and evening sun and all-day filtered sun or dappled shade are fine, but avoid the direct afternoon sun. That said, we hear Wide Brim tolerates more sun than other hosta varieties in the cooler climates of the northern regions where it is hardy. No pruning necessary though spent flower stems can be removed after flowering.
