Description

An exceptionally cold and heat-hardy Boxwood for USDA Zones 5-9, 'Winter Gem' is prized for its dense, attractive, small-leaved foliage and high versatility in the landscape. It responds very well to shearing for creating tight formal hedges in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. In design, we often use two to frame an entrance. It can also be grown in containers and clipped to form perfect spheres and cubes. If you prefer low-maintenance and no trimming, Winter Gem will reach about 5 feet tall and wide and is excellent for spaced groupings or a more natural hedge where its fine texture is a nice contrast for larger-leaved plants.

Landscape & Garden Uses

With a mature height of 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, depending on pruning, the Winter Gem Boxwood is ideal for groupings or as a natural or formal clipped hedge in sunny or partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Two can be used to frame an entrance. It is also excellent for shaping into globes, squares, and other geometric shapes. It is a fine addition to formal gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  2.5 to 3 feet apart solid hedges; 7 feet or more for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Winter Gem Boxwood is easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun to partial shade. We suggest 4 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. When established, it has moderate drought tolerance and will only need supplemental water during prolonged periods of drought. Constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. It responds very well to trimming for size control, formal hedges, and shaping into globes, squares, and various other geometric shapes.
