Description

With some of if not the largest leaves of any Japanese maples in our gardens, the deeply-lobed and serrated leaves of Acer japonicum 'Yama Kagi' are almost double the size of the average man's hands! The result is an absolutely beautiful, lush and exotic-looking upright tree with a rounded umbrella-shaped canopy reaching 15 to 20 feet tall and nearly as wide when growing in the ground and half that size in containers. The new leaves in spring emerge a bright lime green deepening to a forest green throughout the summer. Breathtaking shades of yellows, oranges and reds come with the arrival of coller temperatures in fall. Hardy and easy to grow in USDA Zones 5 through 9, withstanding temperatures to -20F and thriving in sun or part shade, Yama Kagi is sure to be a striking figure and conversation piece in the landscape.

Landscape & Garden Uses

To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Yama Kagi Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, you can plant them in groupings of three where space allows or use two to frame a large entrance. It is extremely easy to grow in containers which can be situated on or around patios, decks and other outdoor sitting and living spaces.

Suggested Spacing:  At least 25 feet apart for space between trees over the long term

Note:  One Japanese Maple can make a landscape...that is, if you don't overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when choosing companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcovers that won't interfere at all with your tree.

Growing Preferences

Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees. They are very easy to grow in the ground or in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai. How to Plant A Japanese Maple Tree In A Pot

In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Yama Kagi is one that will grow in full sun or part shade.

Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
