Description

Providing unusual coloration and four seasons of interest in the landscape, Zebra Grass sports deep green leaf blades marked with yellow horizontal bands randomly spaced from top to bottom. Copper colored seed head wands rise above the foliage in late summer opening to buff colored, fluffy white flowers that persist through winter. Unlike its cousin Porcupine Grass (Miscanthus s. 'Strictus'), which grows in a more upright columnar form, Zebra Grass (Miscanthus s. Zebrinus') grows in an arching shape. Growing 7 to 8 feet tall and 6 feet or more wide, you'll want to give Zebra Grass plenty of room to grow.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, Zebra Grass for a gracefully arching clump that provides outstanding texture and color in the landscape. It can be useful as a specimen, in small to large groupings, or as a grassy hedge anywhere in the sunny landscape. This is one grass that we use quite often as an accent in home foundation plantings. It can also be grown as a stand alone or mixed with other plants in large containers and pots. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens and yellow theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 4 to 5 feet apart for hedges; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Zebra Grass is easy to grow in a wide range of soils, from sandy to well-drained clay, preferring a moist but well-drained soil while establishing itself, however tolerating dry periods when established. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Plant it in a location that provides full to mostly sun. A little shade is tolerated. Miscanthus grasses are very low-maintenance. Simply cut them back one time a year to just a couple inches above ground in late winter, before or right when new growth begins to emerge.
