Description
A rare and unique selection, 'Zorro' Hydrangea is a vigorous grower showcasing abundant large lacecap flower clusters perched atop sturdy, upright, glossy jet-black stems that won't flop. In acid soil, the 6 to 8 inch diameter flower clusters are composed of huge ultramarine-blue florets surrounding a center mound of tiny soft blue flowers. In alkaline soil the flowers are pink. Clean green foliage showcasing the stems and flowers make for an absolutely stunning display in the garden or as cut flowers in floral arrangements. A show stopper that deserves a partially shaded spot in every garden where it will grow, USDA Zones 5a-9b, Zorro is excellent in garden beds or containers.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a rounded mound 4 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide, the Zorro Hydrangea is ideal for use as a specimen or accent in smaller landscape spaces and home foundation plantings, flowering shrub borders and perennial gardens. In larger landscape spaces it is stunning in groupings or in straight or staggered rows as a colorful hedge. Suitable for growing in pots, planters and other containers and is a fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, blue or pink theme gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens and Asian gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 7 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Zorro Hydrangea is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun to part shade in cool-summer climates and part shade (morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun) in hot-summer climates. For best flowering, we suggest at least 4 hours of direct sun light per day. As with so many other ornamental plants, a constantly soggy or wet and waterlogged soil is problematic.
Zorro Hydrangea doesn't require pruning. It is a Hydrangea macrophylla species that produces its flowers from buds that formed on "old wood" during the previous year. This means that even though it is tempting to cut them back in the winter, when they are only bare sticks jutting out of the ground, don't do it. The flower buds are already formed and hidden in those bare sticks, so don't cut them off if you want flowers. If you want to prune do so as you would a mophead type hydrangea.
